Isaac J. Mitrani graduated from Harvard
Law School in 1981 and received an engineering degree,
summa cum laude, from Cooper Union in 1977. During 1978,
he was employed as a structural engineer with the New
York consulting firm of Lev Zetlin Associates.
From 1981 to 1982, Mr. Mitrani served
as law clerk to Judge William Hoeveler of the Southern
District of Florida. During his clerkship, Mr. Mitrani
took The Florida Bar examination; based on his high
score, Mr. Mitrani was chosen to speak on behalf of
the new Bar admittees at the induction ceremony held
at the Third District Court of Appeal.
In 1982, Mr. Mitrani joined the U.S.
Attorney's Office in Miami, where he was then the youngest
Assistant U.S. Attorney of that office. Mr. Mitrani
served in both the major crimes and fraud/economic crimes
units, where he prosecuted a wide range of federal crimes.
Mr. Mitrani also served as a lecturer to law enforcement
groups. In recognition of his achievements, the Department
of Justice awarded Mr. Mitrani its Special Achievement
Award in 1985.
In 1985, he joined the Miami firm of
Beasley, Olle & Downs. One month after joining the
firm, Mr. Mitrani obtained a jury award of $450,000
in compensatory and punitive damages on behalf of a
foreign business that had been victimized by a South
Florida equipment dealer. Mr. Mitrani was named a shareholder
of that firm in December of 1986.
In 1988, Messrs. Mitrani and Rynor
founded the firm. Mr. Mitrani has litigated a wide variety
of cases involving complex business disputes, professional
malpractice, intellectual property, “white collar”
criminal defense, civil rights, wrongful death and other
matters. Mr. Mitrani has tried a substantial number
of jury trials in federal and state courts.
In addition to his business litigation
practice, Mr. Mitrani has been involved in some of South
Florida’s most prominent cases, including the
successful defense at trial of a legal malpractice claim
brought by Miami’s Mayor; a landmark civil rights
trial against one of South Florida’s cities, in
which a jury found the city had condoned excessive force
by its police officers; the representation of a Florida
businessman imprisoned in Ecuador, in which Congress
reviewed the propriety of the involvement of U.S. law
enforcement agencies in that imprisonment; and the defense
of several Bank Chief Executive Officers in civil and
criminal litigation.
Mr. Mitrani is a past-president of
the Federal Bar Association (South Florida Chapter),
where he created and moderated the acclaimed seminar,
“Trial Masters.” He continues to serve as
a board member of the Association. Mr. Mitrani also
has taught trial and pre-trial advocacy on behalf of
NITA, the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.
In 1994, Mr. Mitrani was appointed
by the federal district court for the Southern District
of Florida to serve on its mediation committee for a
three year term. In 1995, 1997 and 1998, the court appointed
him to serve on its magistrate judge selection committee.
In 2000, Mr. Mitrani served as Vice-Chairman of the
Miami-Dade County Bar Association’s Civil Litigation
Committee. Mr. Mitrani has also served as an officer
of the Assistant U.S. Attorney's Association, and as
an author for Juris 91 -- a training program for federal
law clerks.
Mr. Mitrani was born in Cuba and is
fluent in Spanish.
